Exclusive Interview with NWA Smoky Mountain Promoter, Tony Givens

NWA Smoky Mountain is one of professional wrestling’s top independent promotions today. Today, I talk to the leader behind this ever growing brand, Tony Givens.

Dallas

Hello, Mr. Givens! Thank you so much for your time. I know that you have been a very busy man promoting NWA Smoky Mountain as of late. For new fans who may not be familiar with the promotion, what have you guys been up to lately?

Tony
A lot of stuff is going on. We have our biggest event of the year, Collision Course, coming up on May 13. The Main Event that night is Jax Dane vs. Ryback. We have also recently launched a streaming platform at nwasmokymtn.pivotshare.com
Dallas
Wow, a streaming service? That means that the NWA Smoky Mountain brand is ascending to the levels of NJPW, WWN, etc. as alternative options to the mainstream wrestling streaming option. Is 2017 the year where NWASM becomes a household name like ROH, NJPW, and EVOLVE?

Tony
I don’t like to think about what other promotions are doing. So I don’t like to compare what we do to anybody else. I just focus on growing the NWA brand in the Smoky Mountain area.
Dallas
Understandable. Speaking of the Smoky Mountain area, how has the state of Tennessee reacted to the amazing shows that you’ve put on recently? It seems as if NWA Smoky Mountain is getting the most buzz out of all the companies in the state.
Tony
Do you mean the government? *laughs*
Dallas
*laughs* No, the fans. But, I can see how the government might want their cut too.
Tony
There are dozens and dozens of promotions in Tennessee. Some good and many bad ones. The NWA is well represented with NWA Smoky Mountain, NWA SAW and NWA Mid South.
Dallas
Ah, ok. A lot of good representation then. My apologies. Thinking back to the huge main event that you have coming up May 13th at Collision Course, I can’t help but to ask, what else is on the card for that show so far?
Tony
We have Chase Owens defending his NWA Southeastern Heavyweight Title against Anthony Henry. NWA Mountain Empire Champion Toby Farley vs. James Drake. The NWA US Tag Team Champions The Heatseekers vs. The Ugly Ducklings… Plus Rob Conway, Devin Driscoll, Timmy Lou Retton, Myron Reed and more.
Dallas
Goodness. This is easily one of the biggest shows in the National Wrestling Alliance this year. Being that you and your roster put on such great shows week in and week out, do you agree with some fans’ and critics’ assumption that you are the flagship promotion of the NWA?
Tony
I definitely agree with that assumption.
Dallas
It is a valid claim. Well, once again, I want to thank you very much for your time. Running a flagship show is very time consuming I’d assume. One last question I have before you go is, after Collision Course, what’s next for NWASM?
Tony
We have a big event coming up on May 27. It is a benefit for the Patriot Foundation, which is a group that raises money for the family of veterans that have been wounded or killed in action. Past that we are just looking to continue with the momentum we have.
Dallas
That sounds like an excellent cause to get behind. Is there a website people can learn more about the Patriot Foundation on?
Tony
www.patriotfoundation.com
Dallas
Excellent. Thank you, Mr. Givens
